University of Utah Partnership with the Ute Tribe
Ute Indian Tribe and University of Utah renew athletics naming agreement
The University of Utah and the Ute Indian Tribe have renewed their memorandum of understanding allowing the university’s sports teams to continue using the name “Utes.” The university has used the name with the full support of the tribe since 1972.
Addiction & Suicide Prevention
The average income on the Pine Ridge reservation is well below poverty level: $2,600 per year. The high school drop-out rate is 70%. The rate of infant mortality is 300 times that of the national average, the diabetes rate is 800 times the average, and the cervical cancer rate is 500 times the average. Alcoholism inflicts 80% of people on the reservation. The majority of housing is significantly sub-standard with inadequate water, sewage, heating, and insulation. On average, 17 people share a home. The life expectancy is 48 years for men and 52 for women, which is the second only to Haiti in communities in the Western hemisphere (Lakota: The Forgotten People of Pine Ridge (more info) ).
Native and Indigenous Communities and Mental Health
- Approximately 1.3 percent of the U.S. population, or roughly 4.2 million Americans, identify themselves as having Native American or Alaska Native heritage.
- There are 573 federally recognized Native tribes and Native/Indigenous people in America speak more than 200 indigenous languages.
- Most Native/Indigenous people in American live in Mid-West or Western states. About two-thirds now live in urban, suburban, or rural non-reservation areas; about one-third live on reservations.
- Compared to the total U.S. population (14.7 percent), nearly twice as many Native/Indigenous people in America live in poverty (26.6 percent). In 2013, Native/Indigenous people were nearly twice as likely as whites to be unemployed.
